Library Volunteering Information

Your help with shelving and checking books in and out is much appreciated by our librarians, Jessica Lodge and Rachael Lundquist. If you haven't had a chance yet, please sign up to help during your child's class or any available timeslot by visiting our Volunteer Spot signup.

Using Volunteer Spot helps our librarians to plan their day and gives you the benefit of a helpful email reminder. If you've signed up and can't come or stay for your entire timeslot, that's OK. You can un-assign yourself and the librarians will see the change.

Volunteering is easy and fun. The librarians are happy to answer any questions when you come in to volunteer. Instructions will be placed on the librarians' desk to help you find your way.

Instructions for Volunteers

If you see any books on the truck to the right of the librarian desk, just start shelving them. Our library is very busy, so there are almost always books to shelve! You can view a map of library sections [PDF] (you will also find a copy on librarian's desk). The sections are:

  • ER — easy reading books arranged alphabetically by author.
  • E — picture books arranged alphabetically by author.
  • FIC – Middle Fiction — easy chapter books which will soon have blue labels to identify them, arranged alphabetically by author.
  • FIC — regular fiction arranged alphabetically by author.
  • 0XX-9XX — non-fiction arranged by numbers indicating subjects.
  • B — biography, arranged alphabetically.
  • There are also baskets with graphic novels and popular series, such as My Weird School, Arthur, Magic Tree House, Geronimo Stilton, etc.

If you are helping during the class visit, you may be asked to check books in and out. The Librarian's computer will always have an online catalog open and there is a bar-code scanner attached to the computer. If you see any books in the Return Baskets located at the library entrance, you can start checking them in.

To check books in: Take one of the return baskets full of books, click on the Check-out link on the screen, and start scanning book barcodes one at a time. Please check to make sure the book title shows up on the screen.

To check books out: Children line up with their cards and books. For each kid, scan the card first, make sure the child's name shows up, then scan the barcode on the front of the book. For Friday classes, you can click on the child's photo instead of scanning their card, make sure the child's name shows up, then scan the barcode.

Ask Jessica and Rachael any questions you may have. And thank you very much for helping our library!
